Volunteering

One of the most meaningful moments volunteering with Peer 1 on 1 was working with an autistic student who initially struggled with social interactions. Through activities like games and movies, they gradually became more comfortable and even took the lead in one game, showing newfound confidence. This experience highlighted the impact of Peer 1 on 1’s mission—creating opportunities for autistic teens to interact with neurotypical peers and fostering understanding. It deepened my empathy and strengthened my commitment to advocating for inclusivity and autism awareness.

Testimonials by Parents

"When we first learned about Peer 1 on 1, we were hesitant to send our son, Ethan, because he’s had difficulties with social interactions due to his autism. But from the moment we arrived, James made Ethan feel so welcome and included. James took the time to get to know him, not just as a participant, but as a unique individual. Ethan immediately felt comfortable, and each time he attended, he came home talking about the positive experiences he had with the volunteers.

James and the entire Peer 1 on 1 team have created such a supportive environment. Ethan’s confidence in interacting with others has grown, and he now looks forward to going every week. It's such a relief to see him making connections and feeling valued. Peer 1 on 1 isn't just a program for Ethan; it's a place where he’s accepted for who he is, and I can't thank James enough for making that possible."

"Our daughter, Vivian, has always struggled with making friends due to her developmental challenges. We’ve tried various programs over the years, but Peer 1 on 1 has been a game changer for her. James, in particular, has had a tremendous impact. He has such a calm and understanding presence, and from the first day, Vivian connected with him. James never pushed her out of her comfort zone but encouraged her gently, allowing her to interact with the other teens at her own pace.

What truly stood out was how James made her feel seen. He celebrated her small victories and was always there to offer a reassuring word. Vivian's social skills have blossomed in ways we didn’t think possible, and for the first time, she’s excited to be part of something where she feels she belongs. I can't say enough about what Peer 1 on 1, and especially James, has done for our family. It's more than just a program; it's a community that’s making a lasting difference."
